I tend to…

That little girl pictured with the joyous sun filled smile is my motivation. Making sure she is happy and provided for her is everything. So knowing that every day I wake up and go to YWeb and get stuff done I am working towards building the future she deserves is everything.

What a trip it has been so far!

As we get into coding, starting next week, I will carefully observe myself to see how it feels. I forgot that my first coding experience was making a scrolling Union Jack on a Texas Instrument back in the 80s.

My Upcoming SUCCESS

The YWCA is a plus for me. I have always been a windows guys and this YWCA class is allowing me to be a Windows / Mac guy. I decided to apply to this class because I wanted to learn and I am learning a lot not just for my future profession, but for my life and I am really grateful.

It’s Been Five Weeks

Another key point I want to highlight of my time here is that Steinbok and Rashied have touched upon the concept of degree vs. experience. Rashied said one day, “Degree does not necessarily equate to wealth.” It does not invalidate a college education and I do believe everyone should go to university, as many doors open. But as with everything else in life, very rarely anything is handed to you unless you're privileged, so you are going to have to work and sacrifice for it.

Doing Better

This time around, however, I plan on overcoming my shortcoming academia standard by becoming more organized allowing myself to manage my time better.

ALL. BY. MYSELF.

Before I came to YWEB, I felt like my future was bleak and filled with worry, submission, and unhappiness. I had goals and let them burn out. I allowed mental illness and negative circumstances to rule my life.

The Most Challenging Part

Rashied and Julia have been awesome in preparing me for my IT Career. I was given training in self-worth, self-confidence, and self-esteem. I went on field trips and toured IT and Financial businesses located in Madison, WI. I got a first-hand view of the life of a software developer. YWEB has given me the drive to succeed as a software developer.

A Serious and New Experience

However, I just consider that as a reminder of the challenge that I have to fight and the must of getting out my comfort zone.

These First Three Weeks

I have officially completed the third week of the YWeb Career Academy. These first three weeks have been exhausting in the best way possible. I’ve had an unbelievable experience so far and am so excited for the course to continue.

Finding My Future

Starting my last semester in college means I have lots of important and life-changing decisions looming over my head. Where am I going next? What do I really want to do with my life?

Serving Something Outside of Myself

I came in as a transfer student at UW Madison about a year ago. I was a standing Junior, and I was struggling with a sense of purposelessness. I know my purpose should have been scholastic success, but with very few friends in the area I spent a lot of my free time alone in my dorm room.

Speak Truth to Power

As a researcher of digital literacy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I’m interested in finding stories about how marginalized people use digital technology to better their lives and speak truth to power, so to speak.

The Preparation

A group of interns from American Family Insurance sat down with instructors from YWeb to learn more about the program and how it has helped dozens of people jumpstart their careers. As students getting ready to enter the workforce, we asked Rasheid and Julia what YWeb does to prepare its students for success.

I knew I would face couple of challenges

While I was waiting for my permit, I could not work hence I had to sit at home. I was looking for opportunity to kill my time as I had no friends and family to be with. So, I started to look out for opportunities that could allow me to volunteer.

Knowledge or Experience

When I learned about the YWeb program I was hesitating to enroll because I thought that my educational background does not relate in any way to it.

Greater Heights

I came to this program because I wanted something more for myself and my family. What I had was great but there was no progression, unless I went off and started my own business.

Being Part of a Team

For me, music and technology have been lifelong constants; I grew up listening to recordings of great musical masterworks even before playing an instrument.

Introverted Individuals

I found out about the YWCA through a friend who graduated from the previous cohort. So I decided to fill out the admission application and got selected and enrolled in cohort 5.

Change

I think the most important thing Yweb has to offer is change. And through my experience at the Yweb, as well as looking at my fellow cohort around me, I have found that everyone got exactly that - a change.
